done-speaking etiquette

Enhancing Communication in Audio and Video Chats

There's a feature that I'm surprised hasn't been implemented in platforms like Clubhouse, Zoom, Teams, or any kind of audio/video chat. This feature is a UI indication that a speaker is done speaking.

The Current Challenge

In audio and video calls, there's an etiquette where speakers usually pause after making a point or responding. However, this often leads to awkward interruptions. As a listener, it can be difficult to discern whether the speaker is simply pausing or has finished their turn. I recently experienced this on Clubhouse. A speaker paused, and the group was left waiting to see if they were done talking.

A Potential Solution

It seems reasonable to allow speakers to have a quick tap of a button to indicate they are finished speaking. Currently, the mute button serves this purpose on platforms like Zoom during work meetings. When I'm done talking, I hit the mute button, which acts as a visual indicator that I've finished.

Moving Forward

While this practice works, can we be more direct in conveying that message? Perhaps a dedicated button or feature could enhance clarity and reduce interruptions. It's just a thought, but it could improve communication in digital conversations.

And that is an indication through the UI that you are done speaking. I know that there's etiquette involved where there's usually this pause after you've made a point or have responded. But there's always this kind of awkward potential interruption where you might speak again because you're just taking a pause and it's as a listener sometimes it's hard to tell the difference. I just heard this on Clubhouse just a minute ago where someone's talking and then they paused and then the group is kind of waiting to see if they're done talking or not. I think it's pretty reasonable to allow the speaker to just have a quick tap of a button to let folks know they're done speaking. I think it's the mute button right now, honestly, but that 's also etiquette right now on Zoom calls at work for meetings when I'm done talking I hit the mute button then there's a that's the visual indicator that I'm done talking and maybe that's it, but can we be more direct and conve ying that message?
Re: Remote Work: Tools

Navigating Change and Overcoming FOMO in Remote Work

In today's rapidly evolving world, it's easy to feel like we're missing out on something important. Many of us experience moments of doubt, wondering what we're not seeing or capitalizing on as changes unfold right before our eyes.

The Impact of Remote Work

The shift to remote work has been a significant change for many. It brings with it a sense of FOMO—fear of missing out—on opportunities that might be slipping by unnoticed. This feeling is common among those adapting to new work environments and trying to stay ahead in a constantly changing landscape.

Embracing the Present

It's crucial to focus on the present and recognize the opportunities that are available to us right now. By staying informed and adaptable, we can better navigate these changes and ensure we're not missing out on valuable experiences or advancements.

In conclusion, while it's natural to feel FOMO in the face of change, it's important to remain proactive and open-minded. This mindset will help us seize the opportunities that come our way, even in a remote work setting.

Reflecting on gratitude can be a powerful daily practice. Today, I want to express my appreciation for the opportunity to do what I love every day—working in design. I'm fortunate to be surrounded by a group of people I genuinely enjoy at my workplace.

I recognize that not everyone is in a similar situation. Many people face different circumstances, perhaps not enjoying their job or their environment. This awareness makes me even more grateful for the position I'm in.

You know how when someone points a camera at you, you suddenly feel like you have to pose for a picture? It feels awkward, right? At least for me, that's the case. I'm getting the same vibe from hitting the record button and not speaking with anyone directly. Suddenly, I become self-conscious about what I want to say and how to say it.

The Self-Consciousness of Recording

It's interesting to observe how this differs from platforms like Clubhouse. On Clubhouse, there's a one-to-one or one-to-many interaction. It's a conversation. But this? This feels more like vlogging.

Embracing the Vlog Experience

So anyway, here we are, navigating the unique experience of recording solo.
