Twitter is Actively Displacing Slack
template. I have this theory that Twitter, DMs, and your social graph on Twitter is replacing Slack in 2021. If you think of Slack or Discord as your team collaboration infrastructure, it used to be siloed to just your company. You didn't work with people outside of your company, or if you did, that was the exception of your program. Not the rule. Now, if you're starting a new business in 2021, or networking, or talking to people, this is largely all happening on Twitter now. And your social graph on Twitter is becoming more important, especially as an indie founder, than your real blight for your company. Real blight for your company graph on Slack. And I've just had so many experiences over the last two years that have happened in Twitter, DMs, instead of happening somewhere else. The only thing I can conclude is that, potentially, right now, we're kind of witnessing a shift from siloed, semi- private communication channels like Slack to Twitter. And then I imagine, what if you just retooled Twitter DMs? To do everything we're doing today in tools like Slack or even Zoom? What if I could give you a Mac OS app with all your Twitter DMs and the ability to create group conversations and channels, maybe even do one-on-one video calls? Would I even use another tool to communicate other than Twitter? Twitter plus blank, whatever it is? I don't think I would. I don't think I'd use Discord. I don't think I'd use iMessage. I don't think I'd use email. I don't think I would use Slack. I don't think I would need a Slack team for my company. And this is a really interesting insight. I wonder how pervasive that is. If it's unique to like startup founder and indie hacker communities. Or if this is kind of a picture of what a global distributed remote-person works environment looks like five , ten years from now.
